#3 Evening at Uig Strand -
Few scenes are so magically transformed (twice a day) as the great bay at Uig on the west cost of the Isle of Lewis. At high tide the glassy sea floods the beach, but at low tide it’s retreat is utterly complete and you can walk all the way across the bay to the beach dunes. You’ll want to read the story of how marauding Vikings lost their chessmen in those dunes and how they were discovered 800 years later by a farmer (who exhibited the rare treasure in his barn for a while). Or maybe you’ll just sit on the hill above the lovely inn called Balle-na-Cille (where I would stay) and watch the day fade away as the rabbits come out of their warrens to cavort in the pastures. Tranquility of this order is rare in our world and can transform even the most jaded traveler.
