During extended stays in the early 1960s in Paris and NY, #OnKawara began to question the direction of his work. He even considered abandoning art to open a travel agency. However, a visit to the prehistoric cave paintings of Altamira, Spain, affected him deeply and reinvigorated his practice. Kawara's interest in the caves was profound—he saw the caves as a site of the emergence of human consciousness. Shortly after his visit, Kawara began the works that became known as the "Paris–New York Drawings". These works reveal images and iconography that anticipate and define his later practice, including elements such as maps, calendars, list-making, and other forms of the use of language.
