Saw this painting today at Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels - Verhas' La revue des ecoles (1878). Huge, beautiful - the gold of the girls' hats, the sky light, the pageantry. And then, immaculately bearded, to the left, there's Belgium's King Leopold II, Heart of Darkness, heading the review - the guy who, twenty years after this painting and in exchange for rubber and ivory, would initiate a campaign to murder 8 million people in what was then Belgian-controlled Congo Free State. He never stepped foot onto the African continent. Order at home, as illustrated in the painting - chaos, underpinning that order, over there and disguised and marketed as Christian benevolence. - Deborah Downer
