A lone Araucaria tree sits below one of Chile's many beautiful volcanos. The Araucaria tree, also called the Monkey Puzzle Tree, is in the evergreen family and is sacred to the local Mapuche Indian Tribe. The nut is very high in protein and is quite similar to a large pine nut. The Mapuche make delicious desserts and breads from this hearty nut, and I think I tried everyone of them. Once greatly valued for its very hard wood, it is now an endangered and protected tree. I have this as my screensaver of my iPhone, and it's a great reminder for me of not only a really fun assignment for Nat Geo Traveler magazine, but a beautiful sight in an amazing region.
