As a young #photographer working at the Philadelphia Inquirer I was given a great opportunity. In the fall of 1988 I started a project that, for me was an excellent opportunity to move into the kind of work I had always wanted to do.

The writer #BuzzBissinger, who had just won a #PulitzerPrize as a reporter at the Inquirer, was heading south and west to begin a book project about a high school football team. Not just any high school team, THE #highSchool #football team, the #PermianPanthers of #Odessa #Texas.

As #deflategate dominated the headlines, rather then the game, I wanted to look back at my pictures form the book #FridayNightLights, a town, a team and a dream, These pictures helped to illustrate the game in a simpler time and place.

In the above photo, Mike Winchell, the (QB), Brian Chavez and Ivory Christian walk hand in hand to the center of the field for the coin toss. The game was against the #Midland Lee Rebels, their arch rivals of #WestTexas.

This picture became the cover of the book, the success of the work by Bissinger spawn a new genre of sports journalism. #notTheSuperBowl
