Photo by @ChrisBickford @National Geographic Travel. In New Orleans, there Is a parade nearly every day of the year. Whether it be a school marching band doing a practice run around the block, a krewe that has adopted an obscure saint's holiday for its annual celebration, a second-line funeral march for a prominent or well-loved New Orleanian, or merely a sunny Sunday in the spring, some group of individuals are strutting through the streets, celebrating life, death, good weather, bad weather, community, solidarity, and the life of the street that is so essential to the city's culture. In a town as dangerous as New Orleans, parades are bold demonstrations that the streets belong to everyone, and that music and collective joy will always stand defiant against rage, desperation, and oppression. If you listen closely enough, wherever you are in the city, you may hear the sound of a brass band playing. If you do, stop whatever it is you are doing, head for the music, and join the second-line of dancers following the band, strutting and hopping and clapping and laughing. Music and dance are participatory arts in New Orleans. To truly experience the soul of this city, you need to join in the dance. #NewOrleans #SecondLine #KeepinitReal #NOLA @NatGeoCreative
