Only 500 permits to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu are issued each day. Since this number includes porters and guides, the actual number of tourists on the 44 km trek is about 200 per day. We were all treated to a challenging journey over three high passes filled with stairs and winding paths (reaching heights of nearly 14000 feet) and some of the best scenery in the world.
