Silk Road morning in western China. Villagers in Khotan were hauling goods to market when I shot this years ago, long before I ever went to Venice and considered that Marco Polo might well have come this way on his famous journey. These desert oasis outpost have to be some of the most exotic locations I have ever photographed.
