I greeted the New Year at the historic Market Square in my small German hometown of Alsfeld. Disregarding a local ban, people held on to the tradition of setting off fireworks at midnight. Germans this year spent an average of more than $40 per person and detonated an estimated 10,000 tons of fireworks on New Years Eve.
