Photo by @ChrisBickford. Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, under the umbrella of cumulus that often swirls over the Outer Banks. While other parts of the world have their power-centers, be they canyons or mountains or stone-circles, the Outer Banks has its piers. Each one has its own distinct character, and its own congregations of devotees. I belong to the Avalon congregation, along with a motley assortment of brown-skinned drunks, fisherfolk from the mainland, surfers who begin and often end their search for the right wave here, and teenagers who hang out in the carnivalesque atmosphere of pinball machines, pool tables, and parking lot action. For those of you heading home this week to be with your families and reconnect with old stomping-grounds, may your journey be safe and your home feel like home. #outerbanks #avalonpier #kdh @natgeocreative
