Photo by @ChrisBickford on assignment for @National Geographic Travel in #FloridaWild. A group of manatees in Crystal River spring slowly make their way out into the marshes of west Florida to feed for the day. The big guy in the foreground is covered in barnacles, a tell-tale sign that he has recently returned to the springs from a summer spent in the salt waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Other manatees elect to stay in the Crystal River area year-round; in the warm, fresh water, their skin attracts colonies of algae, giving their bodies a furry, greenish appearance. Look closely at almost any full-grown mantatee, however, and you will see multiple scars, mostly from motorboat propellors or sharp rudders. The boat guides of Crystal River are extremely conscientious of avoiding harmful contact with their underwater friends, but out in the Gulf and in unregulated waters these gentle giants swim at their own risk. #FloridaWild #LoveFL @sharealittlesunshine @natgeocreative @visitflorida
