In the early 1950s, when Magnum photographer Constantine Manos was just 17 years old, he discovered Henri Cartier-Bresson in a magazine article and thought, "Those are the kind of pictures I want to take!" So, he set off to explore an isolated community just off the coast of South Carolina called Daufuskie Island, and there he made his "first serious set of pictures." It was this body of work he presented to Magnum, a collection of photographs Manos is still proud of today even though he was really just a kid when he made them. He took this particular picture in 1952 when exploring the forests of Daufuskie Island with some local youths.
