This beautiful bird is called a short faced tumbler pigeon. As you can tell part the name derives from the extremely short beak of the bird which developed over the long term breeding of the bird. The bird was originally bred in Berlin lending to the official title the Berlin Short Faced Tumblr bred from the descendants of the Rock Pigeon. These birds where selectively bred for their ability to “tumble” or fall and roll over backwards in flight, this trait is thought to be extremely valuable in pigeon racing to help the bird avoid potential skyward predators. The first record of this tumbling ability was recorded in India before 1590 and was even mentioned by Charles Darwin in The Origin of Species.
