Photograph by @pedromcbride // 23,500 foot Pumori, which means “Unmarried Daughter” in Sherpa, looms above my friend #KevinFedardo as he navigates the "popcorn section” at 19,800 feet inside the #Khumbu Icefall on Mount #Everest south side.
We did a story on the "Ice Doctors”, the #Sherpa who build the route through this frozen chaos, a place of beauty but also profound tragedy as avalanches have taken the lives of too many here. The brave souls that open these climbing routes are as heroic or more, than those that pay to climb to the top. #inmemory #nepal #blackandwhitechallenge @natgeocreative @thephotosociety
