Photo by @chrisbickford. At the edge of a steep headland on Renvyle Peninsula in Western Ireland, an earthen wall reinforced by stone and lined with barbed-wire fencing keeps sheep and young children away from the cliff. In the distance are the isles of Inishturk, Inishark, and Inishbofin. These waters were the stronghold of the pirate queen Grianne Ui Maille, known to the English as Grace O'Malley, and from her outposts in Galway and Mayo she fought a decades-long battle against Queen Elizabeth's forces, who were attempting to subdue the rebellious Gaelic regions of Western Ireland. O'Malley was captured and imprisoned on multiple occasions, and was famously brought before the queen herself, but she never gave up fighting; and it is due in great part to her leadership that so much of the far western regions of Ireland remained staunchly Gaelic through Elizabeth's reign and thereafter. photo by @chrisbickford. #discoverireland #inspireland #natgeocreative
