Photo by @chrisbickford. A Connemara pony lingers by a stone wall on Omey Island in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Omey is only accessible by car on the ebb tide, when a half-mile strand of beach opens up and connects the small island with the mainland road, which at high tide runs straight down to the water. In late summer, a horse race is held on the strand, scheduled around the tides and the running of the Galway Races. As the sea ebbs and the strand appears, members of the community begin setting up an impromptu racetrack on the sandbar, complete with bandstand, PA system, and guardrails. The horses, jockeys, and spectators drive on to the beach, the crowd gathers round the track, the race is run, the awards are given, the band plays, the spectators leave, and the entire setup is dismantled and hauled off the beach as the rising tide covers the strand, leaving no trace of what just took place. Attending this race is on my bucket list, hopefully sooner rather than later. #thestonesofconnemara #visitireland #inspireland #iicu_ireland #natgeocreative
