This #trophyhead is a perfect example of the preservation efforts made by the #Nazca civilizations. It's believed that the heads may be those of venerated ancestors or those who were sacrificed in order to appease the gods, rather than the immediate assumption that they were the heads of conquered enemies.

You’ll note that the appearance of this head is very lifelike — the Nazcan people who made these heads would sow the lips shut with spines and stuff cotton into the desiccated skin flaps of the head.

The sacrifice may have been in response to prolonged drought experienced by cultures in the region. The middle to late #Nazca period had frequent environmental stress and the Nazca sacrificed in order to appease the gods and pray for rain.
