Today, only 1% of our oceans are fully protected. @TEDFellow and marine ecologist, Alasdair Harris wants to change this. In one Madagascan village, Harris convinced octopus fishers to stop fishing in a portion of reef, giving octopi time to recover. Fishermen saw their long-depleted stocks come back, and watched the octopi grow to ten times their normal size. They’ve now created 63 permanent reserves in eight years — a fast-growing, locally driven way to preserve the ocean and help a quarter of a million Madagascans prosper. And this is just the beginning. Follow Alasdair and his team here: @beyondconservation
