Red pandas are not bears, nor are they related to the giant panda, though they share a name. They have bushy tails that help them maintain balance while in trees and can grow to be 42 inches long and average between 7 to 10 pounds. Their diet primarily consists of bamboo, fresh shoots, berries, blossoms, and the leaves of various plants. Red pandas can be found in Myanmar, the Himalayas and the bamboo forest of southwestern China. Their distinctive soft red fur helps them blend into the trees in their habitat. Unfortunately there are less than 2,500 adult pandas left in the wild. According to the Red List of Threatened Species, red pandas are considered vulnerable of extinction due to habitat loss. To increase the likelihood of breeding, our red pandas are currently at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute for research studies.
