A 45-minute ferry ride north of Venice, Burano is famous for its storybook architecture: colorfully-painted houses accented with contrasting shutters, a maze of streets and canals, and painted arched bridges linking it all together. Old bicycles lean against the walls, washing-lines hang over alleyways, and school kids converge around the local candy-shops in the afternoon. Ferry capacity limits keep the tourist throngs somewhat manageable, but after the last boat departs, the island takes a step back in time. The Burani, most of whose roots on the island go back hundreds of years, tolerate the daily influx of curious snap-happy day-trippers, happy to sell them curios made from their famous lace. But late in the evening, if you are still around, you may chance upon a fisherman tidying up his skiff, who will tell you tales of the Lagoon and give you some small glimpse into the real life of this tiny island. Modern-day globetrotters may find it hard to fathom how anyone in this day and age could be satisfied living their lives within such insular confines, but for the Burani it is the lagoon that defines their world.
