Dubrovnik's southern Mediterranean climate makes for a long hot summer, and cooling off in the azure sea while gazing at the ancient ramparts makes for a very refreshing way to soak up some history. You'll likely find teenagers doing their summer reading sitting crosslegged in the water, crazy old men doing flips off of the diveplank, the ubiquitous group of young boys kicking around a soccer ball, and plenty of sun-worshippers soaking up some Vitamin D. There is something about immersing oneself in the Adriatic while basking in the beauty of the Dalmatian coast that makes the experience of place more real, more tangible. Just like the touch of centuries-old polished stone, or the taste of calamari fresh from the sea, or the sound of street-singers harmonizing against the background of water lapping against the quay--the spirit of a place is best taken in with the senses. Notwithstanding its long and fascinating history, Dubrovnik is a place that can be savored for what it has to offer in the here-and-now, and those who come here tend to require little encouragement or schooling in how to do so.
