Posted this 120 weeks ago. Back in the day when I would get a total of 24 likes on a photo. I scrolled back to the beginning of my account the other day. Pepper is in almost every photo. We found him in a trash can, 3 weeks old. Me and Dennis had just started dating, I'd barely been on the island for a month, and on our way to dinner my friend saw a tiny puppy walking through the rubble in the trash. I took him home. Gave him a bath and fed him. He was so weak he would lift a paw to try to walk and immediately fall over, but he still wanted to play and pull at my hair with his teeth. I knew the second I held him that he was here to stay. I left him in a big crate and put a note on it saying "Don't be mad - we'll discuss it later" for Dennis to find when he came home. We barely knew each other and it was way, way too early to get a dog. But he found us. He needed us and we needed him. It took all about five seconds for the boys to fall in love with each other and that was that. I wanted to name him Pumpkin and Den wanted to name him Black Dynamite (I know) but somehow we settled for Sgt Pepper after our favorite Beatles album. The Sarge. Pepper. Pep. He's been with us through everything. He grew from small and fragile to big and muscular but he always stayed a puppy. He would never let us out of sight. We got Ringo and up until the day he died, the only way to get Ringo to listen on the beach is to call for Pepper. Where Pepper goes, Ringo goes. Went. For every big moment of our lives together he has been right there at the center of it, including at our wedding. We almost had to keep him in between us when we said our vows because he was crying so loudly to be with us (he was just a few feet away with the groomsmen). We got our photos taken right after the ceremony and as we are looking into the camera smiling, I felt something weird happening to my right. It was Pepper, lifting his leg and... peeing on my dress! We couldn't stop laughing. My skirt was so huge he must have thought I was a tree. Later we came to the conclusion that he was simply marking his territory. I might be Dennis' wife but Pepper had my heart and he knew it. We miss you buddy. Always.
