An abandoned cell block at the Eastern State Penitentiary, a fascinating place to visit in Philadelphia. Eastern State, which opened in 1829, was the first prison to have individual cells and was a model for future prisons. Previously, criminals of all types, from murderers to minor offenders, were thrown into one holding pen and left to fend for themselves. The idea of solitary confinement and isolation from the outside world, where inmates would reflect on their sins and reform was born at Eastern State, although that practice changed over time. The prison closed in 1971. Parts of the penitentiary have been maintained to allow visitors, other areas are crumbling. Photo by @cloudyzee
