Peak summer in Currituck county, North Carolina. The corn is high, the blueberries are ripe, and folks are leaving giant zucchinis and tomatoes on their neighbors' doorsteps, trying to get rid of the overabundant fruits of their gardens. The earth here is so fertile that it will swallow up an untended house in a matter of a few years. Drive along any road in this county and you'll see plenty of examples of the land reclaiming itself. That, and miles and miles of ripe sweet corn. I like it best steamed in the husk and drizzled with butter.
