So many children running wild at the temples and pagodas in Bagan. Sleeping, eating , begging ,playing. These are their playgrounds. Some trying to hustle money selling cheap postcards and drawings. Reminded me of when I was young and poor living in Lake Tahoe. Me and my friends use to run in the middle of the road and lay down so the tourists would have to drive around us , all the whole screaming "hit me , I need the money" hahah. Not a very constructive way to earn some loose change. I met these two girls who wanted to tell me the story of the pagoda, in Burmese. They said I could pay if I thought their story was good. And before my guide could fully translate the older one launched into an animated story. Her eyes came alive. Her arms proudly pointing to things she thought was important for me to see. Her spine erect, all of a sudden so full of purpose and pride. Ofcourse I didn't understand a word. But I could see how this simple act of storytelling enlivened her. Inspired her. After the story was done she just sat down with her family and looked completely uninterested in what money was exchanged. The young one bargained with me and I couldn't help but give them whatever they asked for. It's such a beautiful thing when you have so little to be able to have a voice when your young. To have a passion that drives you. I took this photo after while the older girls eyes was impatiently looking out to see who she could tell her story to next. I couldn't help but see a little bit of a younger verison of me in her. Hungry for the doing, the creating and bored with the in between. ❤️❤️
