The Road to the Outer Banks: Eat Local #2. Photos by @chrisbickford. For those who love seafood, there's no better way to get it than right out of the water, with a line, a net, and some bait. Long before the Outer Banks became a tourist destination, Algonquian Indians would come to hunt and fish, and the Croatan tribe lived year-round on Hatteras Island, surviving almost exclusively off the bounty of the sea. Early European settlers quickly learned how to exploit the vast resources of the Atlantic Ocean and the inner waterways, and over time built up what today is one of the biggest commercial fishing industries on the East Coast. For those with a little more relaxation in mind, the Outer Banks offers a myriad of catch-your-own options, from surf casting to pier fishing to fly-fishing, crabbing, deep sea fishing, clamming...the list goes on and on. So bring down your crab nets, your rod and reel, your shrimping boots, and get a little salt on your hands. Just make sure you check the regulations and obtain the necessary permits. The fish and wildlife folks don't mess around.. #eatlocal #fishing #northcarolina #outerbanks.
