This used to be my home; the garage doors were blue and those trees on the left were shorter than me. I know a lot of people who can't wait to be rid of their childhood walls, who rail against the confines of their hometown and vow to the tips of their toes to never return--at least not for more than a moment. That's not me. Oakville, Ontario, Canada. A lakeside suburb of Toronto, nestled in the trees and filled to the brim with golf courses I never used and miles of winding trails that I did. I have nothing bad to say about the place that raised me. Oakville fed me my first taste of Caribbean roti (and my first Bacardi Breezer). Oakville gave me my first glimpse of a Quentin Tarantino film, introduced me to dozens of creative, clever friends, provided the backdrop for 20 birthdays (many of which included my favourite angel food cake with brown sugar icing), and protected me until I was ready to step out into the world alone. Although I no longer have many reasons to return to the place I lived from four until 24, I still do. Because Oakville will always know parts of my heart that each day I forget a little more. And I like to remember. xx.
