Courtney Baker just completed her first set of matches playing sitting volleyball. Relatively new to the sitting discipline, she has a lengthy career in volleyball. “Right out of high school I decided to go to Asbury University, an NAIA in Wilmore, Kentucky. I have tons of new friends from playing volleyball there. It’s my family now.” After her freshman season, @Baker11 was on her way home for Christmas break when she had a car accident and lost her leg. “It took two months for my leg to heal, three months to rehab. I got my running leg in March and was back playing by June.” Was the goal always to get back on the court with your college team? “I wanted to accomplish getting back in standing volleyball.” Courtney just finished her sophomore year, playing from the preseason to the end. “I played last year on JV but I want to get back on varsity.” How did you get involved with sitting volleyball? “Elliot Blake [from the USAV sitting program] found me a couple months after my accident. This is only the second day I’ve tried the game and it will be my first match.” What’s the biggest adjustment for you? “The game is the same but sitting is quicker and I’m learning to move in advance, reading the other players and how to anticipate what to do.” Courtney’s story about her transition back into the sport will be featured on @sports360az’s website later this week sports360az.com #USAVopen #humansofvb
