@Robstercraw with our Dad when he was going through Chemo in '01 and Sean's remaining half of his #AlByrne channel bottom... remnants and memories from life hanging in the shaping room at @sslatersurftackle. I used to love Al Byrne's channel bottoms. In certain conditions they felt like they fit the wave perfectly. Al made me a few then I got a couple for Sean and @skippyslater. I don't think I ever paid Al for this boards and last time I saw him a couple years ago I mentioned it and he just said, "Awwww, don't worry about it. I thought we sorted it out!?". He was such a pleasant and humble guy. Correct me if I'm wrong but I read a story about how the guy who taught him about the channel bottom idea (I'm forgetting his name) went on to design ship hulls for the Australian military. He told Al just to make a really rockered board and start shaping the channels in the center and flattening the rocker until the board had drive between the feet. Al Byrne eventually ended up with the deep 6 channel design funneling off the tail like an increased tail rocker and smaller fins due to the offset of 'bite' from the sharp-edged channels. #DerekHynd is taking that to extremes today with no fins and tons of deep channels gouged into the tails of his boards which fly basically frictionless over the wave until back foot pressure engages the control mechanism. I love branches of surfboard design in all areas and there's still so much more to go. Never be afraid to follow a tangent that makes sense in your head cause you may end up somewhere nobody's ever been. :) #AnotherLongInstagramPost
