This otherwise healthy ponderosa pine growing in a low-elevation pine-oak woodland @YosemiteNPS is covered with holes. What caused them?

Acorn woodpeckers made the holes for storing acorns. The tree is like a woodpecker pantry, making food available for its family throughout the year.

These holes don't damage the living part of the tree: the bark is thick and the woodpeckers drill into it only deep enough for an acorn to fit.
The holes in these storage trees have been counted in the tens of thousands. One tree had 50,000 holes. It can take 100 years for a family of woodpeckers to drill this many holes.
