It was the ninth fire destroying much of the Heidelberg Project, a controversial art installation developed in a decaying Detroit neighborhood. Artist Tyree Guyton made statements about where he grew up and the effect of crime on the rub down blocks that used to be full of life. A blank urban canvas of mostly-vacant houses and lots grew colorful, and over the past 28 years became a tourist destination drawing over 275,000 visitors annually. Cameras in hand, people were drawn to a neighborhood they might usually avoid. They came to see cartoonish pop art of found objects—piles of painted shoes, polka dots, faces, clocks--and in this case stuffed animals covered a house.
