The hunters stand in a line and pheasants are flushed from the forest by 'beaters' and dogs. Each 'gun' has a numbered point along the line which is decided at the start of the shoot using playing cards. Britain does not have a large culture of hunting like the US and many European countries but a few traditional practices such as this still exist. On small shoots like this all the pheasants shot will be eaten.
