Photo @pedromcbride (Pete McBride). Ever wonder where the #leather in your shoes comes from? The tanneries in Kanpur, India on the banks of the Ganges River produce millions of sq. meters of buffalo and cow leather for shoes and belts sold in Europe, the U.S., and beyond. Some production processes involves chemical baths of lime and #chromium to stabilize the leather (seen here). Heavy metal contamination in the Ganges led to many tanneries being closed, but some continue to operate today as it is huge a huge job provider and there are new laws to recycle tannery waste water. Unfortunately, recycling pumps depend on unreliable electricity sources which shut off daily. Government law enforcement is also less than ideal. After gaining limited access to the tanneries, my eyes burned for 2 days. #toughworkers #onassignment @ナショナルジオグラフィック @mountianworld @davidcmorton #surface @エディー・バウアー #Gangas2s @thephotosociety
