Meet Ahmed, an elevator operator in a 23-story office building in downtown Cairo. Between the hours of 8am to 3pm, Ahmed sits on his wooden stool in the corner of the elevator, greets passengers with a kind smile and clicks away at the controllers prompted by the employee's desired destination. Up and down, down and up, the elevator beeps at every floor to signal its arrival, Ahmed's ears pop from very high to very low floors and he makes small chat with passengers between "destinations". Everyone knows Ahmed in this building. He earns 550 Egyptian pounds per month ($80).
