Cheaper Chinese-made smart phones and data plans have revolutionised how Chinese communicate in the last four years or so. Even in back country villages these days, one can see people using smart phones and getting online. The Chinese government still blocks western Web 2.0 apps like Facebook and Twitter, but there are Chinese equivalents and the torrent of public opinion on those sites can now sometimes serve as a form of pressure on the government, especially in exposing official corruption.
