Photo @lucianocandisani (Luciano Candisani). The Muriqui is the largest monkey in the Americas measuring 1.5m long. It's size is impressive, but the social relations are the biggest peculiarities of this species. What is more surprising is the complete lack of aggressiveness and dominance among individuals of the same group, which are common traces to almost all the other sociable primates such as chimpanzees. Among the Muriqui, adult males and females are of the same size and rarely fight or display any aggressive behavior. Because of their "peace and love" lifestyle the Muriquis are called the hippie monkeys.
They are among the 25 most endangered primates in the world. The female in the photo, a survivor of history's changeability, carries the hopes of continuing the species.
