For over 100 years the C&O Canal was a lifeline to communities along the Potomac River as grain, lumber and agricultural products were transported by barge and mules. Now, it's a beautiful bike ride (my favorite in the DC area!) along the Potomac that stretches for 185 miles. You can even stay in some of the old Lock Keeper houses, like the one pictured here.
