We were only the second long-noses that this old couple had ever seen in the remote mega-dunes of the Chinese Gobi. Alain and I landed our paragliders beside their goat pen and they invited us in for tea and freshly-made dumplings. As our crew came over the dunes they were able to translate conversation by two-way radio. China was a different country in 2001, before mobile phones became so prevalent.
