Part 4: In 2008 Sarah and I traveled to Żagań, Poland to see the site of Stalag Luft III. This is a photo (a self-portrait of sorts, imagining what it was like) I took of the dark forest around the camp - the same trees through which men in Orley's camp fled in hopes of returning to their own Elsie's back home. In January 1945, the remaining prisoners were forced to march through snow and freezing conditions for 50 miles in an effort by the Nazi's to escape the approaching allied front. In one of my conversations with Orley, this was the only moment of the story that moved him to tears. He said he saw families fleeing the fighting in the freezing conditions - some carrying children who'd succumbed to the cold but who's parents refused to leave their bodies along the road.
