Urdhva Dhanurasana has been my nemesis from the first day I started practicing yoga. I've always had a hard time back bending, and I could never find comfort in this pose. The key is to keep practicing, and to always add a few repetitions of the same heart opener in one go. Work your legs - back bends are all about the legs - and try to relax your glutes while firming the outer thighs. At the end of my practice I like to move into bridge pose twice, and then wheel x3 - it takes a few tries to really open the heart so don't stop after just one! Of course listen to your body and find what works best for you... I still struggle with this pose daily so don't worry about having a hard time on the mat! The trickiest poses are always the most transformational.
