Looking back at this picture taken during one of the earliest serious expeditions I ever organized - a two week ski traverse of India's Himalaya with two old friends - I am reminded how much more isolated we used to be in the mountains. Here, Allan Pietrasanta looks back on the gorges and passes we skied to reach this 16,000 foot pass, which we only found by guesswork (good maps were then illegal in warn-torn Kashmir.) That afternoon, all three of (including my high school climbing partner Jay Jensen) were avalanched 1,000 feet down a cliffy gully and extremely lucky to survive. As the expedition leader, I felt very fortunate to be only one injured. Despite some disturbing back pain, too, (later diagnosed as two crushed vertebrae) I was even luckier to be mobile enough to ski the remaining two days back to civilization. Even if we could have called for a rescue, there was none to be had.
In the golden glow of memory, I now cherish this snapshot of unassigned "fun" with two of of my closest friends. My only regret is losing the camera that snapped the avalanche engulfing us.
