I know it looks like a shag rug but that is over 100,000 endangered Grey Bat's in an unnamed cave in middle Tennessee. The cave is owned by The Nature Conservancy and is the winter home to over 1/2 a million endangered grey bats. These bats are being threatened by a disease called White Nose Syndrome (#WNS) that has decimated bat populations in the Eastern US. I was lucky enough to photograph this census as part of a story I shot on White Nose Syndrome a few years ago for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. The disease remains unchecked, but The Nature Conservancy has built an artificial bat cave that might give healthy animals home if this cave becomes infected.
