Have you seen a Geisha in real life? Do you know their history?

The history of geishas, an iconic cultural symbol of Japan, dates back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Initially, geishas were male entertainers who performed at social gatherings, but by the 18th century, the role had become predominantly female. Geishas are highly skilled artists trained in various traditional Japanese arts, including music, dance, and singing, as well as in the art of conversation and hosting.

Geisha culture flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan, particularly in the pleasure districts (hanamachi) of cities like Kyoto and Tokyo. Young girls often began their training in their teens, learning from experienced geishas in teahouses (okiya). The journey from apprentice (maiko) to a full-fledged geisha (geiko) involved rigorous training and dedication.
