#OTD in 1943, 18,000 #Marines with @2dmardiv landed on Tarawa Atoll as part of Operation Galvanic.
The Marines’ objective was to secure the Gilbert Islands and their decisive airfields.
Low tides made the amphibious landing exceedingly dangerous. Landing craft were beached on reefs exposed by the low water level, forcing the Marines to wade ashore amidst blistering enemy fire.
By the end of the first day, the Marines managed to establish a small beachhead, which they used to organize and continue advancing.
Despite fighting against a determined enemy, hidden machine gun positions, reinforced pillboxes, and continuous charges, progress was consistent and on Nov. 23, the island was declared secure.
More than 1,000 U.S. Marines were killed in action and nearly 2,000 were wounded during the three-day assault on Tarawa.
U.S. commanders learned important lessons from the Battle of Tarawa that would shape the planning and execution of amphibious landings for the remainder of WWII.
