Walter E. Boomer – the 24th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps – served for 34 years in the Marine Corps, deployed overseas during the Vietnam War and the Gulf War, and is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, two Silver Stars, and two Bronze Stars. Boomer's service is marked by bravery and inspiring leadership, not least of all during his actions in Dai Loc in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam.
While conducting a search and destroy mission, Boomer's unit came under heavy small arms fire from a well-entrenched and reinforced enemy. With complete disregard for his own safety, he supervised the advance of his company and two additional companies of reinforcements through the dense jungle, coordinated artillery and airstrikes on the enemy, resulting in the defeat of a large contingent of Viet Cong forces.
Hear his story.
This is the second video in our series of features celebrating Marine Corps veterans.
