Tanabe Chikuunsai IV is a fourth generation bamboo artist from Sakai, Osaka and a 2022 LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize finalist. His installation pieces use bamboo indigenous to one area of Japan such as Tiger Bamboo and Black Bamboo, which he divides into thin strips by hand. Carefully weaving these pieces together one by one, he creates structures that are airy and light while voluminous and powerful. Working in eco-sustainable practices, Chikuunsai recovers bamboo after exhibitions and reuses them for future projects. After graduating from the Department of Sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts, Chikuunsai returned to his parents’ home in Sakai where he worked to master bamboo arts under his father, Tanabe Chikuunsai III. His works assimilate modern concepts with four generations of traditional bamboo craftsmanship and techniques.
