This year, the area near Shibuya Station saw large crowds over the weekend and Tuesday night as people gathered to show off their Halloween costumes. Adding to their numbers were people converging on the district to see and photograph the revelers.

As usual, zombies, monsters and ghosts mingled comic book heroes and villains in the main arcade, but unlike previous years, the police were out in full force, doing their best to prevent revelers from clogging the streets and enforcing Shibuya Ward’s high-profile campaign to dissuade partying and public drinking.

Although the area attracted 16,000 people at its peak on Halloween night, that figure was roughly 60% less than the previous year’s crowds.

The Japan Times spoke to a few people who showed up to celebrate.
