Friends came out while I was in college, and I feel like the lives of me and my friends were always just a few steps behind them. Whether we realized it or not, that show modeled what we were looking for when we moved to NYC, picked our roommates, found our apartments and chose our hang out spots. Chandler was always my favorite of the Friends characters. I think anybody who uses humor as a coping mechanism can relate to him. They were all characters and he felt more like a real person. I’ve been seeing a lot of interviews with Matthew Perry over the last couple of days and in one of them, he was talking about how Craig Beirko was offered the part first but turned it down. They were friends and Craig stopped talking to him for two years because he couldn’t handle how jealous he was over Matthew’s success and how he missed out. The point of Matthew’s story was that it could have easily been either of them who got lucky. But I don’t think Matthew was giving himself nearly enough credit. I don’t think it was just luck and he was along for the ride. I think Matthew Perry was a huge factor in the success of Friends. And maybe the reason his character always felt real is because there was actual pain and struggle beneath those jokes. RIP Matthew Perry. I hope a small part of you enjoyed your success and felt deserving. You will be missed. 💔
