Roberto Benigni accepted the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for the Italian comedy-drama ‘Life Is Beautiful’ at the 71st Academy Awards in 1999. Later in the ceremony, he returned to the stage to collect the Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in the film, making him the first actor to win in the category for a non-English speaking performance.

‘Life Is Beautiful’ also won for Music - Original Dramatic Score (Nicola Piovani) and was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Roberto Benigni), Original Screenplay (Roberto Benigni, Vincenzo Cerami), and Film Editing (Simona Paggi).
