Sidney Lumet’s ‘The Wiz,’ adapted from the Tony-winning 1974 Broadway musical of the same name, reimagines the classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an African-American cast. At the time of ‘The Wiz’s release, it was the most expensive film musical ever made.

The film stars Diana Ross, Michael Jackson (in his feature film debut), Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Theresa Merritt, Thelma Carpenter, Lena Horne, and Richard Pryor.’

At the 51st Oscars, the film earned nominations for Art Direction (Art Direction: Tony Walton, Philip Rosenberg; Set Decoration: Edward Stewart, Robert Drumheller), Cinematography (Oswald Morris), Costume Design (Tony Walton) and Music - Adaptation Score (Quincy Jones).
